The Importance of Therapy

Do I need to go to therapy? This is a question that most victims of sexual assault or harassment asked themselves repeatedly. YES, you should seek help when you are going through a traumatic event. Therapists are trained to deal with these types of cases, and the benefits of seeing a professional could be life changing. Many victims feel that “they are ok” and push their feelings down deep inside. Unfortunately, what they do not realize is that those feelings could creep up at any time, and certain events might just prove to be “triggering.”  There is no shame in seeking psychological or emotional support after something like this takes place.

I know survivor/ victims might think that seeking out therapy is a “sign of weakness.”  It is not. It is quite the opposite, as it is a chance for you to speak with someone that you can trust, who will listen and provide advice during a very fragile time. Therapy is a way for you to share your feelings as well as your fears with someone who is totally disconnected from your case. While family and friends are always important, a trained therapist can give you guidance, as well as help you navigate your legal journey.

Here is the bottom line. Therapy is helpful. Therapy is not shameful. Therapy is for when you are feeling good and bad.  A therapist is someone that is there for you if you have negative thoughts over the trauma, as well as when you are progressing and making breakthroughs.  Do not rule therapy out because you think you can manage things. There is nothing wrong with having someone help you along the way. Interestingly, most victims are happy that they decided to get help even after resisting at first. Therapy is important and should not be discounted. There is always hope and help.
